Ulta 21 Days of Beauty 2020 | Week 1

My second favorite time of year is here! Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty kicks off today!

In the midst of all the craziness in the world right now, I’m going to share with you something a little bit more positive. Anyone who’s been here for a minute knows how much I love Ulta and how excited I get for the 21 Days of Beauty sale every year!

For those of you unfamiliar with the sale, every day, for 21 days, there are a select few products that are on sale for 50% off. These items are referred to as beauty steals. The sale on that item lasts just one day, so its important to me to have it all planned out and know in advance the items I am interested in!

In addition to the daily sales, there is a weekly special for each of the three weeks. These are usually not quite 50% off but are still really great deals and the sale runs for the entire week instead of just one day. If there is something in portion of the sale that you want, you may want to wait to add it to your cart on a day that you are buying something else.

Diamond/Platinum Exclusives – When you spend an embarrassing amount of money at Ulta each year, like me, you can either earn diamond or platinum status. This award allows you to have free shipping with the purchase of any beauty steal.

I’m going to break it down week by week (in three separate posts), sharing the weekly Hot Buys first and then each of the daily items.

Where I’ve Been… and Some Recent Finds I’ve Been Loving ❤️

Hey everyone!

I just felt the need to hop on here and let you know that I am still going to be posting to the blog, I’m just currently in a state of… holy crap this is a lot of work and I’m trying to balance my life.

The holidays took up a lot of my time, I know it’s February now, but I’ve also been battling several colds/infections/viruses? I’m not entirely sure… but I’m hopefully on the mend for good this time. Things have been crazy busy and I think I’m finally getting to a point where I can sit down and plan things out and get back to regularly posting here on the blog.

I’ve been focusing a lot of my energy trying to grow my instagram following and truly learning just how much work goes into the whole blogging thing! Seriously, major shoutout to those people who do this because… wow. I’d love to be able to post something almost daily, but that’s not a guarantee. I’m trying to come up with some ideas of things to share with you and would love your input!

I’m planning to share a Try-on every Tuesday with you! And I’ve got a few other ideas! But if there are any things that you’d like to see let me know!

Stay tuned for some new content coming this week! ❤️

Currently Loving

This Palmers Vitamin E oil. Truly, honestly, I’m not even being dramatic, this has changed my skin’s life. Like I promise you I’m never going to stop using this. I bought my mom a bottle for Christmas, and I think I’m going to start giving it to everyone I know. It’s amazing, and under $10!

Amazon

Since I’ve been sick, I’ve been drinking tea like it’s my job. So an electric kettle has been my lifesaver. I can’t linkour exact version, because we’ve had it for several years, but this is a similar option by the same brand. If you’re a tea drinker, or like a French press cup of coffee, I highly recommend one of these!

Target

I looked at this bag several different times at Target before I finally grabbed it. And I’m honestly mad I waited as long as I did! This bag is so cute and holds everything plus more. It also comes in a super cute grey color with a slightly different pattern on the flap. I struggled to decide on which I liked more. But eventually decided on the cognac color, because I’m a sucker for a neutral. Bonus, it’s 20% off right now! Snag one while it’s on sale!

Target

I’m constantly looking for ways to be healthier and trying to incorporate healthy options into my diet. Enter TeamiBlends. I’d actually heard of and looked into Teami before they reached out, so when they gave me the opportunity to try their greens I was so excited! I truly do love this stuff! It tastes delicious, is super easy to mix in, and gives me enough energy to get through my afternoon! Through February 17th, you can get 25% off with code SSMITH25 at teamiblends.

Abercrombie denim has stolen my heart. Seriously never in a million years did I think I would be wearing Abercrombie again in my 30s. But I’ve been loving them lately!

These self tanners have been amazing! Of course if you’ve been here for a minute, you know I’ve already talked in depth about self tanners… However, I’ve been experimenting with a few different new ones, some that were sent to me and some I’ve purchased with my own money.

The first ones that were sent to me were by the brand Golden Star Beauty. I’m being 100% honest that I truly do like the products.. however, at this time of year, when my skin turns into even more of the Sahara desert than it normally is, I’ve found that the tanning oil is just not as moisturizing as I would like it to be. It probably doesn’t help that I also take showers with nearly boiling water… but I enjoy them, and nobody said you have to. I absolutely love the face serum. I’ve been using it daily for almost 3 months, and I still have some left. It gives my face a nice, natural glow, doesn’t irritate it at all, or cause any breakouts! I have fairly sensitive skin, so I’m always concerned when using a new product. It doesn’t get my face super dark, like some of the body tanning products I use, but I also frequently exfoliate my face, so I’m sure that if I were to do that less often, it would be more tan.

I thoroughly enjoy both the body tanning products, the lotion and the oil. The lotion doesn’t get you quite as dark as the oil, which is also another reason it works best for winter.

Amazon

This tanning lotion is fantastic, especially for the winter! I’ve actually been using it off and on since the summer. If you follow Jen Reed, @thesisterstudioig, then you know she raves about this company’s AMAZING face wash, that I too am obsessed with. So because I loved the face wash so much I decided that I’d try the tanner. It’s amazing as well! It’s never patchy, goes on easily, is super moisturizing, and you don’t have to rinse it off, but still get a nice dark tan!

Amazon

Right around Christmas we grabbed a Dyson cordless vacuum for a MAJOR discount and could not be happier. This thing is perfect for kids and pets! We have some built in shelving in a few areas around the house and my husband actually just used this to dust them, because let’s be honest, you need a ladder to get to them and they don’t get dusted often enough, and it worked amazingly! Highly, highly recommend!

Also, how cute is the little kid’s Dyson?! we’ve had this for a while and it actually vacuums. (How sad is it that my toddlers got a Dyson before me? LOL)

Mini Dyson | Mom’s Dyson

These are a few of the things I’ve been loving lately! I promise the blog won’t be lonely as long as it has been! I’ll be back to normally scheduled posting from now on! ❤️❤️

Ulta 21 Days of Beauty

There are a couple of times during the year that I seriously love more than any other time… Christmastime, mostly all of fall, and the two times per year that Ulta has their 21 Days is Beauty sales! We already know I’m a makeup/skincare/hair care junkie, so when I can get my favorite high end items for a bargain, I’m here for it. Obviously I’m exaggerating, but these are some seriously amazing deals that you don’t want to miss.

*This post contains affiliate links. All photos are directly from the Ulta website.

If you’re not familiar with Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty, here is how it works. Every day, for three weeks, there are certain items that Ulta sells for 50% off. These items are available at the discounted price for that day only. It ends online at midnight. Don’t wait that long, I’ve missed out on things by a minute in the past. There are items that are available in store and online, online only, and then there are platinum/diamond exclusive items as well.

Diamond and platinum members, aka those of us who spend too much money at Ulta every year, get free shipping on the daily beauty steals. I appreciate that, Ulta. This is why we are such great friends.

In addition to the daily steals, there are items that are discounted up to 40% that stay discounted throughout the entire event. I’ve decided to go through that list and share my picks of those items first and then share with you all of the daily steals I know are amazing and what I’m probably going to be buying.

Hot Buys

These items are available at the discounted price through the entire 21 Days of Beauty, while supplies last.

I’m a huge fan of the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water so I’m super excited to try the crystallized version. It comes in 3 scents, of course I’m going to try the lavender.

Original $32 // Sale $16

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipsticks are a great option for liquid lips and they’re 30% off! I have a couple of different colors, I think I’ll try some new ones for fall!

Original $22 // Sale $15.40

Lorac eyeshadows are some of the first high end eyeshadows I ever tried, and they’re really good. They are super buttery soft, and because of that some of the shades tend to have some fall out. Don’t let that scare you! If you’re comfortable with eyeshadow, they’re super easy to work with! I have several Lorac palettes and I’m so happy with all of them.

Original $39 // Sale $30

I LOVE literally everything I’ve ever tried from Becca. Like honestly, nothing has ever left me wishing for more! I cannot recommend this enough. Its great to put on with your primer, or mix right into your foundation. You can also use it like you would a normal highlighter if you want.

Original $41 // Sale $28.70

I’ve had several small samples of this serum and really liked the way it made my skin feel. I’ve not used it consistently long enough to notice any results, but I’m interested to try it out in the full size, so that I’ve got enough to try it for the recommended two weeks. It has amazing reviews, and will be 25% off!

Original $38 // Sale $28.50

Daily Beauty Steals

Sunday, September 1

Benefit the Porefessional – This is a really great pore filling primer. I remember when I was younger and wanting so badly to try it out but not having the money. When I finally got some to try, I was hooked. I don’t use it daily, but when I feel like my pores are looking larger, I’ll use this and they disappear!

Original $32 // Sale $16

Tuesday, September 3

This Becca powder is probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever used. Literally, it feels cold on your face. Its a hydrating powder and its a super weird feeling at first, but once you get used to it, it’s actually really great! I think it feels nice, and I’ve got dry skin, so I love it. It does, by the time you’re almost finished with the container, lose some of the “moisturizing” feeling, but still works really well! I always set my foundation and I think that this does a fantastic job!

Original $39 // Sale $19.50

Wednesday, September 4

I used to use nothing but bareMinerals, and I swore by it. I still love their products, and use some of them often. This concealer is one of them. The name “Well Rested” is perfect. This is an amazing concealer for erasing everything under your eyes. I’ve used it with powder foundations, liquid foundations, you name it. It’s just like all other bareMinerals products, that start as a powder and blend out to be a perfectly creamy product. Highly recommend!

Original $20 // Sale $10

I’ve tried a few samples of Mamonde rose products and been happy with them. I love the smell of Rose anything, so I’m thinking about giving this a try!

Original $23 // Sale $10.50

This No Poreblem primer is another great option for those who have larger pores. This is a little bit thinner of a consistency than the Benefit Porefessional, so if you’re not really into the texture of that, you can give this one a shot!

Original $18 // Sale $9

Thursday, September 5

There is just something about MAC lipsticks that I cannot get enough of. I’ve never tried one I don’t like. They look good, they wear well, they have an amazing scent! There are two colors available for half price and I’m definitely going to snag this one!

This set from Perricone MD is a great way to try out some of the products, if you’ve been interested. I’m definitely considering giving it a try! It could also make a really great gift!

Original $69 // Sale $34.50

I have a bottle of this in my shower and use it every morning. Its a nice, light exfoliation that is safe enough for every day use. I’ll definitely be restocking on this!

Original $28 // Sale $14

Saturday, September 7

I’ve never met an ABH brow product I didn’t love. I’ve heard amazing things about this guy, and I’m thinking I’ll grab one while they’re on sale. It’s not the same as the Brow Whiz that we all know and love. It has a different shaped end, that I actually have been interested in trying.

Original $23 // Sale $11.50

I was skeptical about this primer when I first heard about it, but I got it a few months ago, and it really is as good as everyone says. It helps my makeup to stay put longer for sure. I have a couple of foundations that I love, but in the summer months they tend to get a lot more dewy and break apart. This definitely helps with that.

Original $38 // Sale $19

Monday, September 9

I’m always looking for a good setting powder, even though I’ve got a handful that I really love. I’m definitely interested in trying this guy out. The reviews are good. Urban Decay never disappoints.

Original $34 // Sale $17

I’m super interested in trying this Peach & Lily serum. I’m not overly in love with any one serum, so I’m open to trying new ones. This one is definitely on my radar.

Original $39 // Sale $19.50

Benefit Hoola bronzer is one of my favorite bronzers of all time. I remember wanting this for so long and getting a sample in one of my subscription boxes. I was hooked. I love it!

Original $30 // Sale $15

Another great option for Lorac! I’ve got both the Unzipped palettes and they are just as good as the Lorac Pro palettes!

Original $85 // Sale $42.50

Saturday, September 14

I have and love this palette! My husband actually got it for me as a Christmas gift, and it has been a favorite since I got it. You can create so many different looks with the shades. They are super blendable and just look amazing.

Original $39 // Sale $19.50

I’ve gone through multiple tubes of this primer. I’ve got dry skin and I love the way this makes my skin feel when I apply it. I usually mix it with other primers, for different needs, but this definitely does moisturize my skin.

Original $34 // Sale $17

This is another product I haven’t tried, but I’ve been interested in it since I heard about it for the first time. I’m always looking for good products to hydrate my skin. This has great reviews, so it’s another item on my wishlist.

My mom has PMD device and loves it. She’s been using hers for about a year or so and she’s been really happy with it. It’s something I’ve always wanted to try, maybe I’ll buy it as a Christmas gift for myself. Christmas in September? Can we make that a thing?

Original $199 // Sale $99.50

Another brand I’ve been super impressed with is Tula. I’ve tried a ton of different products from the brand and been happy with them. I’m not sure I’ll need a new eye cream by the time this is on sale, but the price is pretty great. I may add it to my stash of backups.

Original $29 // Sale $14.50

Friday, September 20

So, today is the day for amazing items apparently. Seriously, Ulta, you’re killing me with these items! So many amazing deals!

This is an amazing concealer. It literally covers everything. I’ve used it several times and honestly, you can use too much. You only need the absolute tiniest amount, so don’t go overboard with it.

Original $21 // Sale $10.50

I’ve never met someone who used this moisturizer and didn’t love it. I was crushed when my last container was empty. So glad to be able to grab another one for half price!

Skincare is super important, for everyone. Taking good care of your skin not only helps prevent the appearance of aging (who wants to look older than they are?) but also, it’s just good for your overall health. Especially when it comes to sun protection. Of course nobody expects you to spend every second of your life inside, hiding from the sun, but when you are outside it’s so important to take proper care of your skin and apply sunblock.

As a naturally fair skinned person, with two extremely fair skinned babies, and a pretty fair skinned husband, I like to think I’ve tried a lot of different sun protection products. Sure I love the look of a good tan, and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t spend most of my teen years toasting my skin in the sun and tanning beds. (Shame on me.) Of course I can’t undo the damage I’ve already done from the sunburns of my past, but I can do everything in my power to prevent any more. I know now that there are so many amazing sunless tanning products out there to give me the look I’m going for without damaging my skin and increasing my risk of skin cancer.

I’ve been so happy with everything that I’ve tried from Supergoop, so I wanted to share all of my favorites with you guys. As well as a list of the things I’m dying to try!

I love that Supergoop is a better brand with better ingredients. Of course there is a price difference, but I will gladly pay a little bit more for a better product that I know works. Click here to see a list of ingredients that Supergoop doesn’t use, and what ingredients they are working to eliminate!

Let’s talk about the kiddos first. I’m trying to get my kids into the habit of never going outside without some type of sunblock on. We’ve tried so many different kinds and have liked a few and disliked a ton. So far, the Supergoop products I’ve tried out have been my favorites by a landslide.

This Sunnyscreen lotion is amazing! It’s SPF 50 and water resistant up to 80 minutes. I can apply it to the boys and know that they’re safe for over an hour, even in the water. It’s fragrance-free, silicone-free, and paraben-free, so I’m not worrying about what I’m putting on their little sensitive skin. The best part is that a little goes a LONG way! This stuff is super thick and it seriously spreads out! I’ve even used it on myself! I love it and will absolutely repurchase over and over again!

Another product the little ones love is the Super Power Sunscreen Mousse. I honestly bought it for them because its a foam and I figured that they would love it. It’s also SPF 50 and water resistant for up to 80 minutes. I love this because it isn’t drying. None of the Supergoop products are, but this just feels good on your skin. Especially if you’re reapplying after being out in the sun! It’s cooling and just feels amazing! I love it! Definitely a favorite in the Smith household.

A problem that I was having with some of the sunscreens I was using was that they were making my skin feel SO DRY! I have seriously dry skin as it is, and I moisturize like crazy, but after using some sunscreens I would feel like my skin was so dry and itchy I’d have to shower almost immediately after coming back in the house. Because of this, I decided to try out the Sun-Defying Sunscreen Oil with Meadowfoam. I’m obsessed with this stuff! It makes my skin glow and it protects me from the sun. I’ll take ten bottles please! It has a super light feel on the skin but it WORKS! I applied this before going on a bus tour in Nashville. We were outside for about 4 hours in direct sunlight and I never even reapplied. No sunburn here! I will never stop loving this product! Supergoop actually recommends applying this at the end of your shower, which is not something I’ve tried, but it definitely will happen soon!

Something that is newer to my collection, but also super important is the Poof Part Powder. I am not a hat wearing person at all. I want to be, but I just cannot find any that flatter me. So, when I’m out in the sun, my part has a tendency to burn. I think our part is something we don’t think about, because we don’t realize how much sun exposure it is actually getting. I will say that this does leave a slight white cast on my hair, and my hair isn’t the darkest, so that is something to keep in mind.

I’d actually gotten a sample of this Unseen Sunscreen and loved it before ever trying anything else from Supergoop. It works so well under my makeup, doesn’t break me out, and doesn’t have any smell or color. That means that I can wear it with or without my makeup! Win-win. It also has that little red Allure Best of Beauty Award Winner which means a lot to me when I’m choosing a product.

I’ve mentioned before that I have fairly dry skin, so I was pretty excited to try the Glow Stick. I’d also seen a few people talking about it and definitely became more interested in it. I love that it’s a stick and I can just glide it all over my face. When they say glow, they mean GLOW. This product gives me a seriously dewy appearance, which I really like, but can become a tad bit frustrating in extreme heat, only because I wear glasses, and they tend to slide off. I have no issues with the way it wears under my makeup, it works perfectly for a no makeup day as well, it just makes my glasses slide down a little more than normal. I still use this almost every day.

I’m really happy with the Lip Shield as well. Lips are another thing I think that are frequently forgotten in the sun. I always have chapped lips in the winter and I’ve been noticing they get super dry when I’m outside in the sun. I’ve been keeping this in my kitchen and using it when I’m out in the sun and just in my kitchen. It’s a great lip balm. It’s also the highest SPF I’ve found for a lip balm, I seem to find SPF 15 a lot more. I am all about the extra SPF.

I can’t say enough good about Supergoop. I haven’t been disappointed by anything I’ve tried. They definitely are a pricier brand, but they’ve got great ingredients and their products work.

I’ve got a wish list about a mile long of products I’m wanting to try, but I’ll pick my top 5 wants to share with you.

First up, the Forever Young Body Butter. It’s currently out of stock, which is one reason I’ve not tried it, but I’m dying to give it a go. What is better than skipping a step in your routine? I always moisturize my skin and then put sunscreen on to go outside. This would be amazing for days I’m absolutely sure I’m heading outside. It would save me so much time!

Second, the Healthy Glow Sunless Tan, is a product I’m super curious about! It has great reviews, and honestly the only reason I’ve not tried it is because I literally don’t need another single tanning product probably until next year. But I’m definitely interested in trying it!

Third, is the Superscreen Daily Moisturizer. I’ve got plenty of facial moisturizers that I love and need to use up right now, but I’m definitely interested to see how this works under makeup. As with everything else, the reviews are awesome, so I’m sure it’s just as good as the rest of their products!

Fourth, is the Shimmershade Eyeshadow. My eyelids are honestly the only part of my skin that don’t get SPF applied to them. I’m super interested in trying these. Maybe once I work through all of my current eyeshadow collection? Yeah right. I don’t think I’ll make it through all of that in my lifetime.

The last item on my list of products I want to try is the Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C. I’m all about convenience and a spray is the ultimate convenience when it comes to sunscreen. It’s non-aerosol, which is so much better! Definitely adding to my cart the next time I’m shopping for sunscreen!

Have you tried anything from Supergoop? What are your faves? What are you dying to try?

FabFitFun Summer Box

*This post may contain affiliate links. #FabFitFunAffiliate

I’ve purchased several FabFitFun boxes and have yet to be disappointed in what I’ve received. You truly do get a great deal of product for a really good price. It may seem like a lot of money, but it’s not a monthly subscription box. You get four boxes per year. I’m going to talk about everything I received in my summer box. I’ll give you my honest opinions about everything I received!

FabFitFun is an amazing quarterly subscription box filled with tons of goodies! I’ve gotten some really great things in past boxes that I use all the time, like an umbrella, a mini backpack, Diff sunglasses, skin care products, and so much more. Each season, you get a box for $49.99 filled with amazing product. You can get $10 off your first box with a discount code too!

When I open my FabFitFun app, which you should definitely download if you’re a member, it shows me every item that came in my box and its retail value. You also receive a little catalog that shows you everything that you received and what the other options were.

The first item I received was the Spiritual Gangster Maya Kimono that retails for $60. This kimono is so pretty and it’s a great length. I’m so excited to wear it. Would I pay $60 for it? Absolutely not. There’s not a kimono on the planet I’d pay $60 for. Is it gorgeous? Yes! Do I love it? Yes! Am I glad I have it? Absolutely!

The second item in my box was the xo, Sienna Black Felt Letter Board that retails for $35. It came with 145 letters and symbols and a cute little bag to store them in. This is such a cute idea that I keep seeing everywhere. In fact, a good friend of mine just used here for her pregnancy announcement. (Yay!) However, I wouldn’t pay $35 for it. I feel like I could find one for a solid $10 less elsewhere. Maybe I’m just being critical because it’s a cute thing to have, but honestly not a necessity. Now that I have it, I’ll probably use it all the time though. You can see a photo above.

Up next, we have this adorable Jennifer Zeuner Star Double Necklace. This is such a perfect dainty, gold necklace. I like that it comes as two strands connected so you don’t have to worry about multiple necklaces and getting tangled. I also love the offset of the stars. It’s so different and cute. This necklace retails for $50. I don’t know the longevity of the brand, but I will say that every piece of jewelry I’ve received in a FabFitFun box has held up extremely well. I’m hoping this one does the same because I really do love it.

The next item was the Doctor Rogers RESTORE Healing Balm, which retails for $30. This balm is for chapped lips, dry cuticles, wounds, diaper rash. It claims to be the finest multitasker. I used it on my lips and I do really like it. It’s thick but not too thick, like Vaseline. It has a nice scent too. Very light but fresh. I personally wouldn’t use it for diaper cream, only because I know when my little guys get a diaper rash the only thing that works for us is Pinxav. I tend to stick with what works. I will definitely continue using this on my lips and cuticles for sure. It will be great to keep in my desk at school too!

Next, a pack of Invisibobble hair ties. These things are alllll the rage right now. I’d bought a pack of a different brand because it was much cheaper, and wasn’t really in love with them. I seemed to have trouble with them pulling out my hair when I tried to take them out. However, I’ve been using these a little bit more and they’re growing on me. I like that they literally stay exactly where I put them! They also do make my four strands of hair look a little bit thicker when I put them into a ponytail instead of a messy bun.

Face masks are my favorite so I was pumped to try the Generation Clay Ultra Violet Brightening Clay Mask, which retails for $39. It doesn’t hurt that it’s purple, my favorite color. It has great ingredients like aloe vera to help brighten dull skin. You apply it to your clean face and leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse off with warm water when you hit that time and it starts to feel tight and dry on your skin. I liked how my skin felt after I used it. Obviously it didn’t do any miracle work with just one use, but it didn’t irritate my skin at all. I’ll definitely use it more and keep you guys posted on the results!

My next item was the Whish Exfoliating Foot Mask, that retails for $32. I was a little bit nervous about this one but also very intrigued. I’ve been doing some research and really wanting to try the Baby Foot Mask. I actually have one in my bathroom from a different brand, but I just don’t have that kind of time to commit to allowing my feet up to two weeks to peel after using a mask. So I was nervous that this would have that affect. I applied it to my feet and left it on for about 8 hours. My first thoughts were that it smelled really good and I was a little bit surprised by the consistency. It was very gel-like. I guess I was expecting more of a cream product. Regardless, after the 8 hour mark, I rinsed it off and I feel as though my feet did feel softer than when I applied it. Of course it didn’t turn my feet into that of my 14 month old, but they felt good. I also take pretty good care of my feet so they weren’t atrocious to begin with. Another thing that concerned me was my fake tan. I was really worried that this would exfoliate my feet to the point that my fake tan would wear off and I’d have a mess on my feet. That wasn’t the case! Thank the lord! I’ll definitely be using this product all the way up.

The next item in my my box was the Grace and Stella Rose Facial Spray, that retails for $26. I’ve been using the Mario Badescu Rose Facial spray for years. So, I was super excited to try this one out. Overall I really like the spray. The bottle is huge. It smells great, like roses. My only complaint, and I hate to say this, is the sprayer. It doesn’t spray in a nice fine mist. It sprays out in spots. I used it one day after applying my makeup and it left little dots all over my face. That was a little bit disappointing. I really like The product itself though, I just don’t recommend using it as a makeup setting spray because it probably won’t make you happy. I think I’ll try to switch the sprayer out with a different one I’ve got and see how that works.

The last item was the “Mystery Item” and it was a tube of hand cream by Grown Alchemist. It is vanilla and orange peel scented and retails for $24. I really like this. It smells so good. It’s super lightweight, not greasy at all and truly made my hands feel soft. Can you ever have too much hand cream? Definitely an item I’ll add to my nightstand to apply to my hands before bed.

I’m so happy with this box. I got a ton of great new items to incorporate into my routine, and wardrobe! Do you like what you see? Sign up now to receive your Summer box before it’s too late! I honestly love this box and will continue to purchase it! You truly do get a ton of product for your money! Everything I’ve gotten up to this point has been awesome!

Self-Tanners

*This post may contain affiliate links.

I’m not sure why, but I just feel a hundred times better when I have a nice bronze glow. There is just something about a nice tan that makes me happy. Maybe I feel like I’ve just been on vacation? I’m not sure… All I know is that I love a good tan and I’ve tried a few things to achieve it.

I wouldn’t consider myself a professional, because I’ve only used a couple that I’ve liked. Once I find something that works, I kind of just stick with it. Why risk a bad tan, when I know what I’m using is good?

I typically apply my tanner every week to 10 days. Depending on my schedule and what I’ve got going on. I do have some other products that I use in between tans to help stretch out the length of time in between as well!

Before I get into the products, I’ll go over some tips I’ve learned along the way. I’ve made some mistakes and had to live with a bad tan until it faded, so hopefully I can help you avoid those mistakes.

Tips and Tricks

Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Exfoliate

I cannot stress this enough. If you have ANY dry patches on your skin, self tanner WILL stick to it. Regardless of the kind you’re using, you will end up with a dark spot. Just like some makeup, self tanners cling right onto dry patches.

Most tanning companies recommend exfoliating 24 hours prior to applying the product. I don’t wait. I typically exfoliate really well right before applying. However, I do not shave right before applying. I also don’t take a super long shower. Hot water opens up your pores, so if you’re spending 30 minutes in a steamy shower and shaving your legs, then immediately applying tanner, you most definitely will have tiny little dots all over your skin. Shaving is a great way to exfoliate your legs, I’ve just found it’s best to plan ahead and shave the day before you’re going to apply.

I’ve noticed that towards the end of the time frame, when I’m getting ready to reapply my tanner, that my skin can start to look a bit dry in some areas (totally depending on the tanner I used) so I’ve started using a dry brush before I shower (also supposed to just be good for your skin in general) and it definitely helps to exfoliate. I’ve been using this from Ecotools and it works great!

Moisturize

I’ve found that it is super important to moisturize your hands, feet, elbows, and knees (areas where the tanner tends to cling to) with a thicker moisturizer before applying. I promise you won’t regret it. I love the Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream, but you can absolutely use something so much more affordable. That’s definitely a splurge, but it’s good stuff. I used a gift card to buy the one I’ve got and I’m trying to make it last as long as possible, because I struggle to justify the price. If you’re okay with the cost, you will definitely not be disappointed by the product. This Soap & Glory The Righteous Butter is a much more affordable option and smells SO GOOD. I definitely recommend something very thick.

Use a Mitt

I would never, ever, apply a tanner without a mitt. A gradual lotion, maybe. But for any kind of mousse or water, definitely use a mitt. I’ve used a couple of different mitts and my favorite by far, regardless of the tanning product I’m using is the Loving Tan Deluxe Applicator Mitt. This one is the thickest, softest, overall best one in my opinion. You can use either side, which is really nice! I’m definitely looking into getting their Easy to Reach Back Applicator as well, for when my toddler (yes, desperate times call for desperate measures.) and husband are unavailable and I need my back to actually look good.

LovingTan Deluxe Applicator Mitt| Real Techniques Buffing Brush

Hands and Feet…

I’m not sure where I heard about this but ever since I first tried it, it’s the only way I apply to my hands and feet. As I said earlier, I always apply a thick moisturizer to my hands and feet. Once I’m done applying my tanner, to my body, I take a makeup brush (see above) and gently brush the tanner onto my hands and feet until they are evenly coated. This helps so much with not over-applying tanner and having a buildup and dark patches in your knuckles.

Another hand tip I recently read somewhere (… I need to start writing things down, because I never remember who tells me these things.) was that once you’ve applied a light coat of tanner to your hands, rub some more lotion on them. THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP: Rinse your PALMS! Nothing is worse than orange palms, and I promise you no matter what you use, your palms will look orange. Granted, it washes off a lot faster than your body, but you don’t want to have to explain it to people the first few days.

Foam/Mousse Tanner – Apply Two Coats…

I alway apply one layer, let it dry and then apply another for a darker final result. It has worked for me with every tanner I’ve used and its something I’m going to continue doing as long as I’m applying self-tanner. This doesn’t really apply to a gradual tan or lotion.

Know What You’re Looking For…

When it comes to self tanning, you have to know what you want. Do you want a super-natural glow to your skin, or do you want to look like you just spent a week in the Caribbean? I prefer the latter, but that’s my personal preference. If I’m taking the time to properly apply my tanner, I want it to be dark. I’ll be talking about my favorites of both types of self-tanners.

My Routine

Like I mentioned above, I use my dry brush to exfoliate before I get in the shower. I make sure it’s been at least a day since I last shaved. I shower as normal, using exfoliating gloves like these.

After I shower, I apply a thick lotion to my hands, feet, ankles, knees, and elbows. Basically any area where the tanner might cling to and cause a dark spot to develop.

Once I’ve got the lotion applied I take the foam and pump it onto the mitt. I generously apply it to my entire body, going lightly on the areas with lotion.

After I’ve got my entire body covered, except my hands and feet, I let that coat dry and apply another.

Once I’ve completed the second coat, I take a makeup brush, like the one pictured above, and a small amount of the foam and brush it onto my hands and feet.

The last step is to take a hand cream and rub it in over the tanner. Followed by a thorough rinsing of my palms. Nobody wants orange palms.

Then, I put on my “tanning” pajamas that cover mostly all of my body, some slippers, and pour myself a nice large cold brew coffee and slowly sip it while I relax on the couch. LOL just kidding about the relax part. I haven’t relaxed since… I can’t even remember. I do actually pour myself coffee. Unless it’s nighttime and I’m going to sleep in the tanner, then I pour myself a glass of wine.

When the time is up, 2, 3, or 8 hours, I rinse off the tan. When I say rinse I mean just that. I spend less than a minute in a warm shower (Not hot. If you’re anything like me your normal shower temperature is just a few degrees shy of the temperature of the sun. And I’m sure there’s no correlation between that and my dry skin…) just rinsing off the color guard. I usually wait about 24 hours after applying the tanner to actually wash my body with soap.

Usually after about 3 days, I’ll start using either The Gradual, or The Body drops mixed in with my lotion, every so often until I’m ready to reapply my tanner.

** I don’t apply my tanner to my face, I just use a slightly darker foundation and bronzer to match it to my body.

Products:

Loving Tan

Loving Tan 2HR Dark Mousse

My overall favorite is the Loving Tan 2 Hour Express in Dark. I’m pretty fair skinned, naturally, but when it comes to tanner, I like to go with the darker option. If I’m spending all this time prepping my skin and applying it, then sitting around for a couple of hours with it developing, why not go dark. I’m not the fairest of the fair, but I’m pretty close. I have never had an issue with this being too dark for me. I love that you can rinse it off after two hours. So much better than putting it on before bed and sleeping in it. Although they do make an 8 hour version and based on the reviews I’ve read, it gets slightly darker. They also have an 8 hour version in Ultra-Dark.

Another plus? No smell! I cannot stand the smell that some fake tan products have. I’m super sensitive to smells, so that may not bother some people, but I can’t handle it. Which is why I love this stuff!

It’s has an olive base, so you will never get that orangey, unnatural looking tan with this product. I always buy the biggest bottle because I know I’ll use it. The smaller bottle is $40, which is know is a lot, but it lasts a while for me. And honestly, $40 is pretty comparable to most other tanning products on the market.

MineTan

MineTan Coconut

Another one that I’m really liking is the MineTan Coconut. I’ve actually been wanting to try some of the other products from this brand, but I need to work through what I’ve got right now.

It gives a very natural, even tan. It’s definitely lighter than the Loving Tan, but it still looks really good! It’s easy to apply, has a color guard so you can see everywhere it’s going, and has a nice refreshing Coconut smell. It is a very light scent, so don’t let that deter you. Once it’s on and dry, it doesn’t smell at all. You have the option to leave it on anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. I’m sure you could leave it on longer if you want, but honestly I hate sitting around with tanner on so I rinse it off as soon as the 3 hour mark hits. I’ve never left it on less than 3 hours, because again, I’m taking the time to prep my skin, I’m going to attempt for the darkest color possible.

St. Tropez

St Tropez Whipped Marshmallow Bronzing Mousse

St. Tropez has a serious cult following. Its honestly one of the first tanning brands that comes to my mind when I think about self-tanner. It’s very well-known. There is a reason for that. It’s so easy to use. It has a color guard just like the other two I mentioned. You know where you’re putting it and that is so helpful. The only St. Tropez mousse I’ve used is the Whipped Marshmallow Bronzing Mousse. Its great! If I’m being honest, I got this one because for $45 it came with a mitt and the other one was the same price and didn’t come with a mitt. However, I mentioned above, the Loving Tan mitt is still my favorite. This one worked. It got the job done, but it just isn’t my favorite.

It claims to have a marshmallow scent. I don’t agree. At first application, it definitely does have a slightly sweeter smell, but after a few hours, I smell that fake tan smell. It does rinse off with the color guard and I don’t smell it after I’ve rinsed, but I just hate that smell. It gives a nice natural color. I’m sure that if you used the darker shade, it would give you a darker color. I’m definitely interested to try their express version, because this one needs to sit on the skin for 4-8 hours. I don’t enjoy sleeping with this stuff on, which honestly might be the only reason it’s not the best.

St Tropez Purity Water Gel

Another St. Tropez product that I’ve tried is the Purity Water Gel. I had gotten a sample in a beauty box and it was about enough for two applications. I liked the smell of this, and I liked that it was clear so that I could just apply it and go about my day. No color guard, however, means you don’t know exactly where you’ve already applied it. I did it two different times and had no issues with missed spots or patches anywhere. I liked the color it gave. It was a very natural, subtle tan. So if you’re looking to be ultra dark, this is not for you. If your looking for a more natural glow, this is definitely something you’ll like.

Tan-Luxe

Tan Luxe is a very, well I guess the name says it, but luxe brand. It just feels fancy. I honestly haven’t met a product from this brand that I don’t love. Everything works really well for me, and has given me no issues. Never an orange tint, never streaky or blotchy. It’s definitely a pricier brand, but its so worth the money.

Tan-Luxe The Gradual

The first product I’d ever tried from this brand was The Gradual, an illuminating body lotion. It is super lightweight and smells so good. Never, ever has that fake tan smell. It really does give your skin a very natural, healthy glow. It is something that you can use periodically, or as your daily moisturizer. I like to use this about 3-4 days after I apply tanner, usually every day until I reapply my tanner. A little bit of this goes a long way. It’s a bit pricey for what it does, but in the winter I used it almost daily and never had that smell you get from other gradual tanners. You definitely need to use this sparingly on your knees, elbows, ankles, hands, and feet. It can and will get a little weird in those areas.

Tan-Luxe The Body

Another product I’m loving from this brand it their The Body drops, that you mix into the moisturizer of your choice. You can mix as much as you want into whatever body lotion you are already using and it will give you a beautiful, natural glow. It definitely will not get you as dark as a foam or mousse that you apply and rinse off, but it does give you a decent amount of color. I really like to use these when my skin is feeling extra dry!

When I purchased mine it came in a set with Super Serum facial drops. The only place I’ve been able to find them is in this set from HSN. Its actually a better way to buy the two of them because you’re getting both of them for less than the price of just The Body. I use the Super Serum drops every morning in my AM skincare routine and they do give my face a slight amount of color. Of course I wash my face and exfoliate, so the color never gets as dark as the mousses that I apply to my body, but I do think that this works. It also has a lot of really great, hydrating ingredients, to help your skin to look more plump and healthy.

In the past, I’ve used the Jergen’s Natural Glow moisturizer and it does give a really nice natural glow. So if you’re just beginning to enter the world of self-tanners, it may be a great place to start. I never had any issues with a streaking, splotchiness, or any weird spots, but it definitely starts to develop that fake tan smell after a few days.

I plan to do another post once I’ve tried out some more tanners and let you guys know what works for me and what doesn’t.

I’m so interested to know if you’re using the same products. If you’re not what are you using and loving? Do you have any tips or tricks that you use? Let’s Chat!

Morning Skincare Routine

As much as I love makeup, there is really no point in trying to perfect a full face of makeup when you aren’t taking care of and prepping your skin properly. I’ve tried quite a few different products in each category and what I’m using now, I’ve been using for a few months. The products are all really great and all work really well together. They also work really well under makeup. There are some moisturizers that I have, and love, but prefer to use when I’m not planning to put any makeup over them, or use them at night.

For reference I’ve got really dry skin from head to toe, so I’m looking for serious moisture in my skincare routine!

First, I start with a clean face. I use one of two cleansers that I keep in my shower and on my bathroom counter. For years, I’ve used the Philosophy Purity cleanser. It literally removes every trace of everything that is on my face. So, typically I’ll use this when I’m washing my face at night. However, its not overly drying, so I use it some mornings as well. Another great face wash that I’ve been loving lately is the Tula Purifying Facial Cleanser. I see people raving about Tula all the time, so I finally decided to try some of the line. I love this face cleanser. It smells so good. A little bit goes a long way, too! This is also a great face wash for the end of the day as well. It does a great job removing everything, without stripping my skin of moisture.

If I’m going to exfoliate in the morning I prefer to use this Philosophy Microdelivery Exfoliating Facial Wash. I don’t exfoliate every morning, or even every day for that matter, but this is what I use if I feel the need. It’s a very fine exfoliator and leaves my skin feeling super clean.

Philosophy The Microdelivery Exfoliating Facial Wash

I just recently began using this Tula Pro-Glycolic Resurfacing Gel. So far I’m really happy with it. I definitely feel like I’ve noticed a difference in the texture of my skin. You apply this to a cotton pad and apply it to your face after cleansing. It has no alcohol which is a huge ingredient in so many toners. I don’t like to use toners that contain alcohol because I can feel it instantly drying my skin. Of course, I follow with moisturizer, but why would I want to rub alcohol on my face? This stuff is great and I feel good about using it!

I recently purchased a Tan-Luxe set that came with their Tanning Drops you mix with lotion (I’ll talk about those in another post) and a facial serum. I’ve been adding a couple of drops of this to my normal serum and it’s giving my face just the lightest hint of color. I definitely recommend it! I’ve only found them on HSN, so I’m guessing that it’s an exclusive item. They are normal priced at $49, but you can get the set of the Serum and tanning drops for $45. It’s a pretty great deal.

My everyday serum is actually a pretty affordable product from Avon. I’ve been using it for a while now and it seems to work well for me. This is where I mix in the drops of the Super Serum. It’s called the ANEW HydraFusion Replenishing Serum. They retail for $40 but right now you can get two for $35. If you need an Avon representative, let me know. I’ll get you in touch with one!

I follow my Serum with my moisturizer and there are two I’ve been loving lately. I either use the Clinique Moisture Surge, or the Tula Hydrating Day and Night Cream. Honestly there really isn’t one that I prefer over the other. I really like both of them. I have really dry skin, so I actually add a couple of drops of oil to either of them and I’ve got no complaints. They are both extremely hydrating and the hydration lasts. I’ve used some facial moisturizers that feel really good at first application, but then by mid-day I feel like I need more. These do not disappoint. They both also work really well under all of my foundations. I honestly just use whichever one I feel like using that particular day!

As I mentioned above, I have seriously dry skin. I can thank my kids for that because my pre-pregnancy skin was super oily. The minute I got pregnant with S, I swear my skin turned into the Sahara Desert and never looked back. Because my skin is so dry, I like to mix oil into my routine as well. I’ve been LOVING this Sunday Riley CEO Glow! It has made a huge difference in my skin. Sunday Riley products are pricey, but SO worth it, in my opinion! I just mix 3 or 4 drops with my moisturizer every day and I LOVE it!

Can’t forget eye cream! The skin around your eyes is so delicate and starts to show wrinkles before anything else! I’ve been really loving this BeautyCounter Nourishing Eye Cream. In fact, I’m almost out! It’s so lightweight and well, nourishing. Haha. I’ve really been liking it, along with all of the other BeautyCounter products I’ve tried. They’re a great brand, and I’m planning to try more when I’m in need of other products!

I also apply some type of lip balm at some point while I’m getting ready. If my lips are dry, I will lick them and get dry skin and I have a horrendous habit of picking at them. One of the best products I’ve found is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. I know it’s called a sleeping mask, and I do wear it every night to bed, but it’s also a great lip balm throughout the day as well. I’m telling you, this stuff lasts forever. I have a sample size that is .1 oz and I’ve been using it almost every single night since October. Yes, I said October. So don’t be afraid of that price tag of $20 because you’re probably going to be using this for he next decade. I’m kidding. You shouldn’t keep any product for a decade. But you get what I’m saying here.

The very last thing I do no matter what I’m doing, a full face of makeup or no makeup at all, is apply some SPF! I am such a freak about SPF for both myself and my family. Skin protection is so important. I’ve been LOVING this Unseen Sunscreen from SuperGoop! If I’m wearing makeup I use this along with my other primers and have absolutely no issues. It’s seriously good stuff! * The only time I don’t use this is when I’m using my It Cosmetics CC Cream, because it has SPF in it already. *

I know that this might seem excessive to some people, but it is a routine that works for me and my skin type. Some of these prodcuts are also a little bit pricey, but I genuinely believe that there are some things that are worth a higher price tag. When it comes to my skin, I’ll pay more if I believe that something is truly worth it.

One last thing that I use when I’m feeling extra tired, is this Tula Glow and Get It Eye Balm. Its cooling, so refreshing, and practically erases my undereye darkness. The cooling lasts too. So the entire time I’m getting ready, my eyes feel so good!

I feel like it’s only fair to share a makeup free selfie with you guys, since I’m talking all about my favorite skincare!
