American Eagle Try-On August 2019

I just posted a month or so ago about how my love for AE was back and then started struggling to find items I love in the store. The problem is, the stores around me aren’t the greatest so I have to do a majority of my shopping online. American Eagle definitely has a much larger selection online! (And I believe that some stores are just bigger and better than what I’ve got locally)

For sizing reference… I’m 5’4″ and around 135 lbs. I typically wear a small in tops and 4/6 in bottoms.

First up this basic sweatshirt. I actually didn’t love the color as much on me as I did when I saw it on the shelf. I loved the color for fall, but maybe it was a combination of the fit and color that I just wasn’t feeling. Maybe it was the shorts. I’d definitely still wear this color, but I think I’d like it better with leggings.

The sweatshirt does come in a ton of other color options and it is so comfortable, so I highly recommend it. If this color looks better on you than it does on me, then rock it! I really loved the tie-dye options! There were also a lot more choices online than there were in the store. I’m wearing a small and I’d say it runs large. I could have easily sized down.

These shorts were amazing. Like, I can’t come up with a better word than amazing. They’re the Tomgirl short shorts, but honestly, they’re not really short to me. Either I’m more confident about the size of my thighs, or I’ve officially reached the age where I’ve stopped caring what people think about my thighs. If its hot out, this mama is wearing her shorts. They’re TTS, I’m wearing 6.

Of course my store had a return of these Aerie sweatshirts that literally everyone is raving about and I had to try them on! They run so large! I’m wearing a small and could easily have done the XS. However it wasn’t so big that it looked sloppy either. They really are as comfortable and cute as everyone says! I tried on both that my store had and it was a tough decision as to which I liked better!

Here is a picture to show just how long they are.
And, here is the Camo option.

Sweatshirt | Shorts

I decided to try a cropped sweater. Not a slightly cropped sweater but a fully cropped sweater. Full disclosure, I didn’t like it on me. I’ve had two kids, and even when my abs (lol I never had abs) or I mean, stomach was flatter I still didn’t really care to show it off. The sweater is super cute, and I was able to make it work by doing a small front tuck. I really loved it, but it just wasn’t practical for me to buy because its not an item I’ll wear to work at all. But, it was super soft and cozy and definitely a great option.

Sweater | Shorts

So, sticking with that cropped sweater, I wanted to see what other options I could pair it with. I am literally obsessed with these pants. They’re so stinking comfortable! I already have several other pairs of green pants and didn’t need them so, I didn’t buy them, but if you are in the market for a pair of green pants with a more casual twist, these are for you girl! I would say they’re TTS, I’m wearing a 6 but easily could have done the 4. They’re super stretchy!

Sweater | Pants

I paired those same pants with this amazing Aerie sweater. It comes in several options and I’m in love. This sweater is perfect for transition into fall. You’re going to see me wearing this one allll the time.

Sweater | Pants

I threw it on with those shorts from earlier and it works with them too!

Sweater | Shorts

I think that this tank is the perfect layering piece for fall. Throw it on with a cardigan and you’re good to go. There were a couple of different color options. It’s super soft and comfortable. I’m wearing a small so I’d definitely call it TTS.

I have been wanting to try a pair of cropped flare denim so when I saw this pair in my size I grabbed them. I feel like for my height they needed to be slightly more cropped. They just hit me at a place that makes it look like I bought my pants too long and tried to hem them, making them too short. They were super comfortable and if you’re a bit taller than me I would recommend them for sure! They do come in short sizes online, so I may have to check that out!

Tank | Denim

I paired the tank with a standard dark wash, high waisted skinny jean and again just needed to add a cardigan. These jeans were so comfortable and TTS, I’m wearing a 4. I could have gone with a 6 and if I’d purchased them that would be what I’d have gone with. But they didn’t have one in store.

Tank | Denim

I threw the green pants back on with this tank and absolutely LOVE how they pair together! Again, add a cardigan and you’re good to go!

Tank | Pants

The last item I have to share with you is this ah-mazingly soft pair of leopard plush leggings. I can’t say I’d go out in these, but for lounging around the house?! Perfection. They’re seriously the softest thing I’ve ever felt! I don’t think I’d necessarily pair them with this sweater, but I didn’t have anything else in the fitting room to pair them with. It was hard to take them off to leave the store!

They’re definitely a comfy loungewear pair of leggings. There is no compression whatsoever, so if that’s what you’re looking for, then these may not be for you. If you’re looking for something cozy to snuggle up in the winter with, get them!

American Eagle Try-On

So. Many. Good. Things.

When I was in high school, American Eagle was seriously one of the only stores I shopped in. They were the ONLY Jeans I wore. Something happened. We broke up. I’m not really sure.

We recently rekindled our relationship and it is flourishing. I can’t get enough. I’m in love with pretty much everything! I could do without crop tops because, well… two babies. Not to mention I was never about the crop top life to begin with. Oh well, I’m making things work with AE. And I’m loving it.

Also, while we are talking about the past, maybe it’s because I was born at the end of the 80s and have such fond memories of the 90s, but I am LOVING the fact that things I wore 25 years ago are trending again. Like overalls. You guys don’t know how much I have been wanting a pair of overalls. And the pair your about to see is super cute! I didn’t buy them though, because I’m trying to behave.

I had the boys with me, begging to get out of the fitting room that we were “trapped” in. My soon-to-be three year old is already such a man. His father has trained him well, what can I say. So, be kind when looking at the pictures. ❤️

First up, these basic tanks are just that, the perfect basic. I have one in white and I love it! The fit is great and TTS. I’m wearing a small.

Are mom shorts still cool if you’re actually a mom? Asking for a friend. I really love these mom shorts. The wash and the pleating in the front is the perfect throw back to the 80s and I’m living for it. I’m wearing a 4 in the photo but easily could have gone with a 6, so I’d say TTS.

I would definitely have paired this outfit with different sandals. Or maybe even some throwback Reeboks or something?

Soft and Sexy Basic Tank | Denim Mom Shorts

Moving on, we have the same tank, because it’s so good, with these Tomgirl shorts. These were SO CUTE! They’re selling out fast, so if you like them… Snatch. Them. Up. They’re called short shorts, which would normally deter me, but they’re not actually that short. I loved the hem detail, on the outside it was folded up and stitched. Something cute and different! These are pretty TTS, I’m wearing a 4.

Soft and Sexy Basic Tank | Denim Tomgirl Short Short

This cardigan is a perfect addition to the outfit for a cool night and transitioning into fall. It’s cropped but not super cropped so it works well. I love it over a simple tank with shorts! It’s TTS, wearing a small.

Slouchy Cardigan

I kept this pair of shorts on for this top, that I am obsessed with! I loved the color and the fit! The bubble sleeves and the tie at the bottom are so different and fun! It came in at least one other color as well. It will be a great transition piece for fall. It has an open knit, so if you’re worried about that at all, just throw on a cami and you’ll be good to go! It’s TTS, I’m wearing a small.

Bubble Pullover Sweater

I spotted this tee right before I went into the fitting room and I fell in love! I’m living for button front tees right now and this one is no exception! The colors are great and the length is awesome too! I tucked in half of the front and you can see how long it is, you could even size up, belt it, and pair it with leggings!

Striped Button Down Shirt

This yellow tank is another soft and comfortable, yet cute option! I really liked that it was ribbed but not overly obnoxiously ribbed. It’s so simple but so good. It comes in several other colors too. Definitely TTS, I’m wearing a small.

I paired it with these distressed jeggings that are on super sale and so comfortable. I know I’ve said it before, but they have the best denim! I’m wearing a 6 and I’d say they’re pretty TTS, I could probably have gone with the short option if it were there, but I’m barely 5’4” so…

Soft and Sexy Ribbed Tank| Ne(X)T Level Jegging

I’m fairly sure I haven’t worn a denim skirt in probably 15 years. I honestly think middle school was the last time I had one and I’m not even mad that they’re coming back. I’m not really sure why we ever stopped wearing them. I tossed this one on with the yellow tank and it’s good to go! It had a great length, it covered everything but wasn’t awkwardly long. I’ve got short legs though, so if you’re a long legged beauty, I say who cares. Show those legs off. ❤️ I loved the light distressing and raw hem too! Of course, it’s high waisted, so if you’re at all concerned about the length, you can always pull it down lower on the waist. It’s TTS, I’m wearing a 6. I always say if I’m unsure with skirts and shorts to size up rather than down, because nobody wants their legs busting out of the bottom of anything.

High Waisted Mini Skirt

Drumroll please! It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for! The overalls are finally making their long awaited appearance. Okay. Maybe you don’t even care about the overalls. But they were my favorite thing I tried on. I already said it, but I’m just loving this overall trend! These guys come in S, M, L sizing rather than a standard number. I’d say they’re TTS, I had the small on, and easily could have worn the medium, but the small wasn’t too tight at all! They had the perfect amount of distressing and a really great length! They’re the “Tomgirl” fit, so they have a nice relaxed, but not baggy fit. The quality was outstanding! Highly recommend if you’re looking for a pair of overall shorts!

Tomgirl Denim Short Overall

I told you guys, there was a lot of good stuff, and had I been sans children, there would have been more. I’ll try to do another try-on soon and share it with you!

What are your favorite items? What would you like to see me try on that I didn’t get to?! Let me know in the comments! I’d love to chat!

Favorite Affordable Denim

I have absolutely no problem splurging on a high quality item, if I can justify the purchase and it’s not completely outrageous. (I love a good designer handbag, but I’m talking like Coach… not Louis Vuitton – although I would graciously accept a Neverfull if someone felt like gifting me one.) However, I don’t think it’s an absolute necessity to spend a fortune on some things, like denim. I have so many affordable pairs that fit me so well! So, why would I spend hundreds of dollars on something I don’t absolutely need. I’d rather have a few extra Starbucks runs! I honestly try to keep my denim purchases below $50. But I will go higher if I feel they are truly worth it.

I’ve seen several of my favorite bloggers talking about Old Navy recently, and I’ve been IMPRESSED. I’ve never had any problems with Old Navy, in fact, there was a time that it was one of my go-to shopping spots. But more recently, I’d kind of gotten away from it. I’m telling you, they’ve got good stuff and it’s so affordable!

For YEARS, the only place I would buy denim was American Eagle. Like, I literally wouldn’t even try on denim anywhere else because they were that good. I feel like either I was going through a weird phase, or they were, because there was a period of time that I just really couldn’t find jeans I loved there. It was actually devastating because I was a loyal customer. Fast forward to now, and I’m back on the American Eagle train. I’ve gotten a few new pairs recently and I can’t get enough. (I’ve got two more coming this week!)

Like I said, the price is important, but it’s not the only thing that matters. If something looks or feels cheap, I’m out. I want the look and feel of high end without that high end price tag. I like my jeans to stay the same size all day. Isn’t it the worst when your jeans fit amazingly in the morning and by the end of the day they’re falling off?!

This pair from Old Navy is a perfect pair for work. I’m a teacher, so as much as I love a good pair of distressed denim, it’s better to save those for the weekend. This pair has just the slightest distressing at the ankle and they look so good! They are high rise, which is great!Disclaimer: The picture on the website does not do these jeans justice.

Another amazing pair from Old Navy! These are more distressed, but seriously SO CUTE! Again, I feel like these are so much better on and in person than they are on the model online. C’mon Old Navy, you’ve got to get better pictures!

These American Eagle jeans are perfect! They’re not distressed at all, so they’re great for casual Friday at work, but they’re still so cute, and comfy! They’re super high waisted and the button fly adds a nice touch!

This pair of is my all time favorite pair of distressed denim, unfortunately (but not really) I’ve lost some weight and they’re too big on me now. They kind of fit like a boyfriend jean, which honestly isn’t that bad. I’m debating whether or not to buy a new pair or just keep the ones I have. (YMI isn’t a brand I hear a lot of people talking about, but their stuff is good!! They make skinny “jeans” in just about every color that are PERFECT for work!)

I purchased mine from Jules and James Boutique, but you can find them here.

This pair of Lauren Conrad jeans from Kohl’s are another great staple. They have no distressing and are a darker color (also available in lighter shades) so they look great dressed up or down! A perfect mid rise pair of denim.

Lastly, is this super cute and comfy pair from Walmart. I never in a million years would have thought to even look at Walmart, until one of my favorite bloggers talked about these. I couldn’t pass them up for the price! They’re great quality too! A slightly lower rise, but by no means would they fit in the category of low rise.

I’m always on the hunt for good budget denim! What are some of your favorites?
